New London Area Hydrogen Sulfide Mitigation Project

Each spring, residents and visitors to the New London area may notice a strong “rotten egg” odor coming from the Mill Ponds area. This smell is caused by hydrogen sulfide (H2S)—a naturally occurring gas that can be released from the New London Dam and surrounding waters.

Calhoun Dam Restoration Project - Boat Landing Closure

The Middle Fork Crow River Watershed District (MFCRWD), in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is leading a major enhancement initiative within the Dietrich Lange Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This project aims to renovate aging water control structures including the Lake Calhoun diversion structure and the Lake Calhoun outlet dam. 

Tadd Lake Nanobubble Pilot Project

The MFCRWD, in partnership with the City of Atwater, carried out the Tadd Lake Nanobubble Pilot Project in 2024 to explore ways to improve water quality conditions and reduce algae in local lakes.

Middle Fork Crow River / CD47

The Middle Fork Crow River Watershed District received a Clean Water Fund: Accelerated Implementation Grant in 2015 to do an assessment of the current conditions of river banks along the Middle Fork Crow River downstream of Lake Calhoun. This system is also maintained as a public ditch system by both Kandiyohi County (CD 20) and Meeker County (CD 47).
